There are a few things you need to understand before you can start an internet marketing program.
1. Where does most of your traffic come from?
If most of your traffic comes from myspace, not Google, then why optimize your website for Google? If you’ve cracked the code for drawing traffic from any source whether a search engine, or not, then keep working on it, don’t break what works because the SEO gurus say their way is the right way.
One of the biggest mistakes most business owners make is following the pack without understanding why they are. They may create squeeze pages because they were told that is how the ‘professionals’ do it.
2. Prepare Your Site for Marketing
a) Submit to search engines – once. You can submit a website once a year, but don’t submit monthly. This can get your website banned. If you want the search engines to pay attention to your site, then go to your Google Account, access WEB TOOLS, and SITE MAP. Enter your FEED link. You’ll find your feed link in your feedburner account. It is the link with your url in it. Enter this URL into the Google sitemap generator and it will robot your site to build the sitemap. You don’t need to add this sitemap to your website. Just keep coming back to Google once every month or two and generate a new map.
b) Build lenses. These will increase links. There are many places to create lenses: squidoo.com, myspace.com, facebook.com, bebo.com, gather.com etc.
c) Submit to the social networking sites: digg, technorati, del.icio.use, reddit, etc.
d) Submit articles to the blog search engines: blogsvines, yearblook, etc.
