A Good Look at Roofing

Love the house? I am more interested in the shingles. We are renovating our home. I visited the site to Explore GAF Roofing Options! There are quite a few construction supplies on this site that I plan to use. We want to do the back porch in stone.

I watched their video Avoiding Roof Disasters. You have to wade through the first half of the video before you get past the patronizing 'talking down to stupid consumers' before you reach the information. Once you do, there are some great tips.

I already knew the differences between bying a good integrated system over picking up shingles from the local hardware store. I've had generations of contruction workers in my family.

This company is worth looking into. They have an excellent product that exceeds the standards and has won awards:

  • Awarded #1 visual brand by Life Magazine
  • Fireshield® brand roof restoration system named "Best Product" by the editors of Buildings magazine
  • Premium designer roofing shingles have twice received the Architects Choice For Excellence Award

The GAF-Elk’s Premium Collection has several design choices including shingles that emulate the rich look of natural materials like wood, slate, and stone. But, what attracted me was the flexible sheeting that goes under the shingles.

The second thing that 'caught my attention' was the fact that they sell everything needed with a 50 year warrenty. This is one thing I learned from the construction workers in my family. A roof or wall warrenty is worthless - because one manufacturer will blame the other. The only way a warrenty is valid is if a) all the products are purchased from one manufacturer and b) if a factory certified installer is hired to complete the project.

Here is a link to an episode of House of Dreams focusing on the GAF-Elk's roofing system.

Roofs are expensive. I don't plan to put a new roof on my home for at least 20 years. That is why I've started taking a look around for a good roofing system, instead of just picking up some shingles.
